Dot Grid vs. Square Grid PDF: Which Printable Paper Should You Use?

It is the great debate of the stationery world. On one side, the classic reliability of the square grid. On the other, the modern minimalism of the dot grid.

The Square Grid (Graph Paper)

Square grid paper is what most of us grew up with. It is explicit, rigid, and reliable.

Best For:

Math equations, Engineering diagrams, Pixel art, Floor plans.

Why use it? When precision is paramount. If you are drawing a floor plan, you want solid lines to define walls. If you are doing long division, you want boxes to keep your numbers aligned.

The Dot Grid (Bullet Journal)

Dot grid paper is the darling of the "BuJo" (Bullet Journal) community. It consists of dots arranged in a grid, usually spaced 5mm apart.

Best For:

Journaling, Sketching, UI Design, Flexible layouts.

Why use it? It is there when you need it, and gone when you don't. The dots provide guidance for drawing straight lines or boxes, but they visually disappear when you look at the page as a whole. This makes your drawings and writing pop.

Which one should you print?

The beauty of printing your own paper is that you don't have to commit to a whole notebook.

  • Project A (Renovating the kitchen): Print 5 sheets of Square Grid. You need those hard lines for measurements.
  • Project B (Weekly planner): Print 5 sheets of Dot Grid. It looks cleaner and less cluttered.
