Supporting Generators
Keep these as backup tools when you need quick blank templates.
1-Inch Square Grids
Our 1-inch square grid is strictly calibrated for standard 28mm to 32mm miniatures. Unlike generic generators, we guarantee a 1:1 physical scale output, ensuring your tabletop combat distances are always mathematically accurate.
DM Tip: Perfect for indoor tactical combat. We recommend printing on 120gsm cardstock for the best tabletop feel and to prevent ink bleed-through.
Hex Maps
Perfect for regional overland travel, mecha combat, and tactical wargaming systems.
DM Tip: Ideal for 'Hex-crawl' wilderness exploration. One large hex usually represents 6 miles of travel.
VTT Assets
Export high-resolution dot grids and textures. VTT integration optimized.
DM Tip: Turn off standard grids and use 10mm dot grids as subtle alignment markers for digital drawing.

Everything you need to know about generating exact-scale RPG maps.
What is the exact physical size of a standard D&D battle map grid?
A standard D&D 5e battle map grid is strictly 1-inch by 1-inch (25.4mm x 25.4mm), representing a 5-foot in-game area. To ensure your 28mm-32mm physical miniatures fit perfectly without overlapping, you must use a generator that outputs at a minimum of 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) and print at exactly 100% scale.
How do I print a 1-inch grid PDF to exact scale without distortion?
To print a 1-inch grid at exact 1:1 physical scale, you must bypass your printer's default margin scaling. 1) Download a 300 DPI PDF. 2) Open your print dialog. 3) Crucially, disable "Fit to Page" or "Scale to Fit". 4) Set the scaling option strictly to "Actual Size" or "100%". This guarantees the 1-inch squares print accurately to the millimeter.
Why should I use hexagonal grids instead of square grids for RPGs?
Hexagonal grids are mathematically superior for wilderness exploration (Hex-crawls) and wargaming because they provide equidistant movement in 6 directions. This eliminates the "diagonal movement tax" inherent to square grids. A standard "large hex" typically represents 6 to 24 miles of overland travel in tabletop RPG campaigns.
How to Choose the Right Grid for Your Campaign
Whether you are running a classic D&D 5e dungeon crawl or a massive hex-crawl wilderness exploration, choosing the right physical grid is crucial for tabletop immersion.
Square Grids for Tactical Combat
The 1-inch square grid is the undisputed standard for indoor environments. It perfectly aligns with dungeon walls, corridors, and standard 28mm to 32mm miniature bases. When printing our square grids, ensure you select A4 or US Letter paper size in the generator, and always print at 100% scale to maintain the physical accuracy of the 1-inch dimension.
Hexagonal Grids for Wilderness & Wargaming
Unlike squares, Hex maps offer equidistant movement in six directions. This eliminates the "diagonal movement tax" common in square grids, making hexes the superior choice for overland travel, regional maps, and tactical wargames like Battletech or Lancer. A standard "large hex" usually represents 6 to 24 miles of travel in RPG campaigns.
Paper Quality Matters
While standard 80gsm office paper works for quick drafts, we highly recommend printing your final battle maps on 120gsm to 160gsm cardstock. Thicker paper prevents ink bleed-through, lays flatter on the table, and provides a much more premium feel when moving metal or resin miniatures across the terrain.
